Hey Monkeys,
It's Monkey Fact Monday and today I want to discuss global warming with you guys.
For a long time I was confused on what exactly global warming was. Everyone says, "global warming this, global warming that". Meanwhile I had absolutely no idea what it really was.
With that in mind, I asked one of my teachers to please explain what global warming was. In simple terms. He started drawing pictures which showed me what global warming is.
I re-created these pictures and want to share them with you.

 
It all starts with a happy planet!

The earth has been a happy planet with fresh water, air, and life all around! The sun's rays try to hit the earth, but our atmosphere is present and acts like a shield to protect the earth from a lot of the sun's very strong rays and make sure we don’t get too hot or too cold.

However, human activities like burning down forests, transportation and factories which burn fossil fuels like coal, causes a whole lot of carbon dioxide to be released into the air.

This carbon dioxide (and other gases, which are all called greenhouse gases) absorb the sun's rays and release energy which eventually heats up the earth.  A lot of it is trapped by the earth's atmosphere and can't get out into space.  The sun's rays also bounce around between the earth, trapped by the atmosphere, forcing the earth to warm.
We also have a problem when one of the layers of the atmosphere called the ozone, has holes caused by pollution so that more of the sun's rays can now hit the earth.
With more and more carbon dioxide being released by human activities, we have more heat coming into our atmosphere than is going out. This is what causes our earth to heat up and is called global warming.
Some effects of global warming are :
Changes in climate e.g increased sea temperature, polar ice caps melting, more intense hurricanes in some places and increased probability and intensity of droughts and heat waves in other places. There are also economic and health consequences like drinking water shortages in areas of drought and the spread of disease in flooded areas.
